COVER PICTURE: The chemokine CCL17 is expressed by a subset of CD11b+CD8- dendritic cells (DCs) in the mouse. These cells were visualized in vivo with the help of CCL17/enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) reporter mice in which the green fluorescent protein is expressed under control of the endogenous ccl17 locus. In the gut, CCL17+ dendritic cells are located in the subepithelial dome as well as the interfollicular area of Peyer's patches, and in subepithelial positions of the colon. Shown is a cross section of colonic crypts with CCL17+ DCs (green). As CCL17 production is strongly upregulated through Toll-like receptor ligands these cells may be directly involved in the uptake and presentation of environmental microbial antigens.
