CD8+ T cell–mediated inflammation of the small intestine due to tissue specific proteasomal processing of Hsp60. The top and left panels show hematoxylin and eosin stained cross sections of a naive small intestine (top panel) and colon (left panel), and the bottom and right panels represent the same organs 16 d after transfer of HSP60-specific CD8+ T cells. Massive expansion of these autoreactive CD8+ T lymphocytes causing inflammation and tissue destruction is observed in the small intestine but not in the colon. The authors describe organ-specific processing of major histocompatibility complex class I antigens as a cause for organ-specific inflammation. For details on differential antigen processing, see related article by Kuckelkorn et al., pp. 983-990.
