Ebola and Marburg viruses use lipid rafts as a platform for viral assembly and budding. The cover image, produced by confocal laser microscopy, shows a cell expressing the envelope glycoprotein of the Marburg virus stained for lipid rafts (green) and the glycoprotein (red) of Marburg virus. The yellow appearance in the overlay (bottom) indicates the localization of the Marburg glycoprotein in lipid rafts. The image is a three-dimensional reconstruction compiling the data from 50 focal planes. The localization of filovirus glycoprotein in the rafts appears to drive the viral budding through this membrane compartment. See related article by Bavari et al., pp.
