Cover picture: Lymphotoxin beta receptor (LTbetaR) is a signaling molecule required for the development of lymphoid organs. After receptor ligation, LTbetaR activates nuclear factor (NF)-kappaB, a multifunctional transcription factor involved in many immune and inflammatory responses. Mice deficient for IkappaB kinase alpha (IKKalpha) are defective in NF-kappaB activation through LTbetaR, but not through tumor necrosis factor receptor. Defective LTbetaR signaling in IKKalpha-deficient mice resulted in the lack of Peyers patches (top, wild-type mice; bottom, IKKalpha-deficient mice). Whole-mount immunohistochemistry with mAb against vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM-1) was used for the detection of Peyers patches (arrows) in embryonic intestines.
