High molecular weight group A and group C meningococcal polysaccharideshad no significant toxicity for mice or guinea pigs. Furthermore,these polysaccharide preparations contained negligible amountsof biologically active endotoxin.

The high molecular weightgroup A and group C meningococcal polysaccharides were excellentimmunogens in six human volunteers. Antibodies belonging tothe immunoglobulin classes IgG, IgM, and IgA were produced.

Theseantibodies were highly meningococcocidal in the presence ofcomplement.
